8 October, 5-6.30pm
at Senate House, room 103

My research brings an ethnomusicological approach to the performance of Islamic identities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Its primary focus is on rural Uyghur women, and their ritual gatherings (hetma chai). Drawing on recent work on Islamic soundscapes (Hirschkind 2006, Frishkopf 2009), I explore the ways in which ritual sound, emotion and ideology come together to construct space and place. My analysis of Qur’anic recitation style provides insights into the ways in which ritual participants situate themselves within transnational ideological currents in the Islamic world, and how they position themselves in relation to the Chinese state.

Open to the public, free of charge; no booking required.
